Bach proved his creative prowess in this set of 30 inventive and increasingly complex variations upon a simple aria, encompassing a remarkable range of styles and forms. Usually performed on solo keyboard, the Variations are presented in a unique string arrangement by Dmitri Sitkovestsky that deepens their tonal character and colors, allowing Bach's genius to blossom fully. The Portland Baroque Orchestra performs this concert with crisp vitality of period instruments.
