A Night with Beverly Ritz. “Cool and Soothing Solo Piano Jazz”
Lacey Mae is the latest recording by Waldport’s newest resident, Beverly Ritz. A blending of “west coast cool” and “modern impressionism,” Ritz’s nine solo piano tracks are made up of six jazz standards and three original pieces. The pieces are very different from each other, but Ritz gives them all a “cool” and relaxing treatment that creates a consistently pleasant mood from start to finish. Some of her unusual chord voicings add spice to her arrangements, but there are no jarring discordances or “acid” moments.
Originally from Washington, DC, Ritz began her recording career in Santa Monica Canyon, California in the 1980’s, where she initially established Goldie Mae Records & Ritzy Music, ASCAP. However, in the mid-80’s, as Beverly saw the environment fade and discovered that her recordings were being broadcast in northern Oregon, so she followed her music to the Pacific Northwest! A stint in Seattle prompted her to write and record Herschel Sea Lion, Discovery Park and Walk Away From the Blues (Goldie Mae Records, 1986). Relocating to Nedonna Beach on the northern Oregon coast, she suddenly became immersed in defending and befriending countless animals who approached her, needing help. Not only did she come to their aid, but she immortalized them in songs and children’s books.
