Early this spring the City Council (LincolnCity), on recommendation of the Public Arts Committee, commissioned artists Ted and Judith Schlicting to create a ceramic tile mural in the natatorium of the LincolnCityCommunity Center.
The approximately 5' x 30' mural design depicts an underwater view of swimmers and sea life. In addition to the artist-sculpted puzzle-piece tiles, the mural will include many tiles made during the next few weeks with the help of several groups. The artists, Ted and Judith, are conducting 60-90 minute workshops in LincolnCitywhere locals and visitors alike can have the opportunity to create personal tiles destined to become part of the finished mural.
Judith comes to each session with enough supplies, materials, ideas and encouragement for attendees whatever their level of experience. After a short teacher demonstration, the tile makers set to making their own tile with images, words and patterns. When the session is over Ted and Judith carry the tiles back to their studio at the Rowboat Gallery in PacificCitywhere they slowly dry until ready to be fired, glazed and fired again.
Before then, however, the largest and longest series of work sessions is scheduled on June 18 at the Lincoln City Cultural Center (LCCC). There locals and visitors over 16 years of age may join one of four separate sessions -- 12:00, 1:30, 3:00 and 4:30.
